How to Create a B-Roll Style Instagram Reel

Are you tired of the reel puns yet??

Well you’ll be REEL excited to hear that this is the final lesson in our reels unit! After today, you’ll be able to create, explore, and venture into the Instagram reel space with a new found confident (plus some pretty cool emails to look back on for when you get reel-y stuck).

Without further ado, let’s get into it!

What is B-Roll?

According to handy-dandy Wikipedia, B-roll is “a dramatic re-enactment scenes staged by the producer and performed by actors, to be used as cutaway shots.”

In the world of social media, this looks like you setting up your phone to record before doing the normal things you do everyday.

As a business owner this can look like:

  • You creating products.

  • You staging your products in your store.

  • You sipping coffee sitting in your store or office.

  • You working on your phone or computer.

It can also look like:

  • Putting flowers in a vase.

  • Pouring coffee.

  • You out on a walk.

Anything that you do on a day-to-day basis is free game for recording.

How do I make a B-Roll style reel?

So how do I load my Instagram profile up with aesthetic, simple, beautifully branded B-roll style reels??

First, make sure that the B-roll videos you’re taking aren’t super busy. It should be a simple action with an easy to look at background. If that means moving objects out of the way of your phone camera, do what you have to do!

To edit your B-roll style reel:

  1. Upload your b-roll footage to Instagram’s reel editor.

  2. Add your trending sound.

  3. Add text to your reel and edit the timing to align with where you want it. Feel free to edit the text to change to the beat of the music.

  4. Add your caption and post!
